IV-J-1 Self-diffusion Coefficients of a Reentrant Liquid Crystal CBOBP

چکیده

Self-diffusion coefficient tensors of a reentrant liquid crystal CBOBP were measured in the high and low temperature SA phases. In the high temperature SA phase, the diffusion coefficient component D// is larger than D⊥. The two activation energies are similar. This property resembles that of the nematic phase, and indicates that the layer structure of the high temperature SA phase is disordered remarkably. In the low temperature SA phase, absolute values of the selfdiffusion coefficient components, D// and D⊥, are close to each other, in contrast with the diffusion coefficient components in the high temperature SA phase. The activation energy for D// is much higher than that for D⊥. This suggests a firm layer structure. It is also interesting to note that the activation energies for D⊥ are similar in the high and low temperature SA phases, and the values of D⊥ are found on one straight line through both phases. Taking these in mind there seems to be no change in molecular interaction and molecular arrangement in the two SA phases, as far as the perpendicular components concern. The change in molecular interaction and structure seemed to have occurred in the parallel components.

Entropy-driven enhanced self-diffusion in confined reentrant supernematics.

We present a molecular dynamics study of reentrant nematic phases using the Gay-Berne-Kihara model of a liquid crystal in nanoconfinement. At densities above those characteristic of smectic A phases, reentrant nematic phases form that are characterized by a large value of the nematic order parameter S≃1. Along the nematic director these "supernematic" phases exhibit a remarkably high self-diffu...

Deuterium stimulated-echo-type PGSE NMR experiments for measuring diffusion: application to a liquid crystal.

The accessibility of molecular self-diffusion coefficients in anisotropic materials, such as liquid crystals or solids, by stimulated-echo-type (2)H PGSE NMR is examined. The amplitude and phase modulation of the signal in the stimulated-echo-type sequence by the static quadrupole coupling during the encoding/decoding delays is suppressed by adjusting the pulse flip angles and the phase cycle. ...

Kinetics and mechanisms of crystal growth and diffusion in a glass-forming liquid.

Extensive data on the viscosity, covering 15 orders of magnitude, and crystal growth rate, covering seven orders of magnitude, of liquid diopside (CaO.MgO.2SiO(2)) were collected in a wide range of undercoolings from 1.10T(g) to 0.99T(m) (T(g) is the glass transition temperature and T(m) the melting point). The raw growth rate data were corrected for the increased interfacial temperature produc...

Diffusivity Maximum in a Reentrant Nematic Phase

We report molecular dynamics simulations of confined liquid crystals using the Gay-Berne-Kihara model. Upon isobaric cooling, the standard sequence of isotropic-nematic-smectic A phase transitions is found. Upon further cooling a reentrant nematic phase occurs. We investigate the temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fluid in the nematic, smectic and reentrant nematic ...

In simulation and modeling of mass transfer phenomena and design of separation equipment; and prediction of mass transfer in miscible fuels, it is necessary to have the mass transfer coefficients. In this work, a diaphragm- cell was manufactured to measure the liquid-liquid diffusion coefficient. Then the cell constant was obtained to be 0.188 cm-2 with 0.5 molar solution of potassium chloride ...
